William
Strutt built North Mill in 1804 as the first
'fire-proof' cotton spinning mill and most
technologically advanced building of its time. It
houses a museum that celebrates the Strutt family
contribution to Belper at the beginning of the
Industrial Revolution. Displays and hands-on
exhibits show the history and technology of spinning,
framework knitting and the Derby Rib attachment,
Brettles hosiery collection, chevening and hand
nailmaking. Also nearby worker's housing and
renown River Gardens.
