| Aros Experience, The | Portree, Isle of Skye | Visitor Centre | | For most of us the opportunity to get close to a Sea-eagle is rare. To see it on it’s nest raising it’s young, bringing in fish, sea-birds, rabbits and much more is just impossible!
However, by visiting the Aros Centre you can have this experience as we introduce you to live pictures, from two remote nests at separate locations. Our indoor exhibition is manned by an RSPB Warden who will interpret the footage for you, explain the life cycle of these magnificent birds, that were re-introduced to Scotland from Norway, and answer specific questions. As part of the exhibition, you can enjoy a Sea-eagle’s view of the Skye mountains in our audio-visual and learn a bit more about our history and culture. |

Unique geomorphology, rare birds, insects, plants and lichens make this well worth a visit (Site of Special Scientific Interest). |
| Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre | Culloden Moor, Inverness | Battlefield | | The exciting new Culloden Battlefield visitor centre and exhibition opened in December 2007. Through recent archaeological and historical research the National Trust for Scotland discovered that the previous centre was sited on the third Government line of the battlefield. With the Trust's resolve to return the battlefield to as close as we know it on 16 April 1746, the centre was moved. The previous facilities had struggled to cope with visitor numbers at peak times and its site will be returned to being part of the battlefield. Built on a rock in an idyllic loch side setting, Dunvegan is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. On display are many fine oil paintings and clan treasures, the most famous of which is the Fairy Flag. Legend has it that this sacred Banner has miraculous powers and when unfurled in battle, the clan MacLeod would invariably defeat their enemies. Another of the castle’s great treasures is the Dunvegan Cup, a unique ‘mazer’ dating back to the Middle Ages. It was gifted by the O’Neils of Ulster as a token of thanks to one of our most celebrated Chiefs, Sir Rory Mor, for his support of their cause against the marauding forces of Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1596. |

The cathedral was built in the first half of the 13th century, though it was extended and altered in the 14th and 15th centuries. Earlier Bishops of Ross might have occupied a cathedral in Rosemarkie. However, the diocese of Ross wasn’t particularly wealthy, which is probably why the new cathedral was built on a relatively modest scale. At the Reformation of the 1560s, the cathedral was used as the town’s church, although lead from its roof was granted to Lord Ruthven in 1572. Charles I tried to encourage repairs in 1626 as part of his attempts to restructure the Church of Scotland on the same lines as the Anglican or English church. |

Following Edward I’s invasion, it fell into English hands and was then reclaimed and lost again. In the 14th century, it figured prominently in the Scots’ struggle for independence and came under the control of Robert the Bruce after he became King of Scots.
