Antonine Wall: Bar Hill FortTwecharRoman Remains
The highest fort on the Antonine Wall containing the foundations of the headquarters building and bath-house. To the east sits a small Iron Age fort. The wall ditch runs past both. This is the best site to appreciate the strategic significance of the Antonine Wall and enjoy the superb views over the Kelvin Valley.

Though the fort is not visible, the wall ditch survives and there are two beacon platforms. Here the Romans had to cut through solid rock to create the ditch.

Biggar Gasworks MuseumBiggarGas Works
Typical of a small town coal-gas works, Biggar’s is the only one surviving in Scotland. The oldest part of the works dates from 1839.

Cadzow CastleHamiltonCastle
Constructed between 1500 and 1550, Cadzow Castle was known as the castle in the woods of Hamilton. The castle was built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart for his half brother, the second Earl of Arran. The property overlooks a parkland known as the Cadzow Oaks. These ancient trees are all that remains of a medieval hunting park. At present, only the exterior of the castle can be viewed.

A good example of a Norman castle mound, which would have been surmounted by a palisade and timber tower.

Craignethan CastleCroddfordCastle
Craignethan, dating back to around 1530, is an important early artillery fortification with an exceptional residential tower and fine setting. The oldest part is the tower house built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. The castle’s defences include a caponier, a stone vaulted artillery chamber which is rare in Britain.
