Landguard Fort is the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England in 1667 and the first land battle of the Royal Marines. The current fort was built in the 18th century, and modified in the 19th century with substantial additional 19th/20th-century outside batteries. Guided tours and audio tours of the fort are supplemented by an audio-visual presentation of the site’s history, and by guided tours of the outside batteries.

During the boom years of the cloth trade in the 15th and 16th centuries, the residents of Lavenham paid even more in tax than the city of York. The village today is famed for its wealth of surviving timber-framed buildings, which make it one of the best-preserved medieval villages in England. One of the finest of these buildings is the Guildhall of Corpus Christi. Inside, you can follow the changing fortunes of Lavenham through exhibits on the local cloth industry, farming and agriculture before exploring the unique streets that have changed little in five centuries.

For almost five centuries the picturesque turrets of Melford Hall have dominated Long Melford's village green. Devastated by fire in 1942, the house was nurtured back to life by the Hyde Parker family and it remains their much-loved family home to this day. Their interior decoration and furnishings chart changing tastes and fashions over two centuries, but it is the stories of family life at Melford – from visits by their relation Beatrix Potter with her menagerie of animals, through to children sliding down the grand staircase on trays – that make this house more than just bricks and mortar.

Discover one of England’s most complete and unusual keeps at this fascinating visitor attraction in Suffolk. The unique polygonal tower keep of Orford Castle, stands beside the pretty town and former port which Henry II also developed here. The castle is remarkably intact allowing visitors to explore from the basement, through the lower and upper halls to the roof where there are magnificent views seaward to Orford Ness. Around the rooms is a maze of passages leading to the chapel, kitchen and other chambers in the turrets.
